UCU salvages weekend National Athletics competition

Ugandan athletes have now a cause to smile as Uganda Athletics Federation secures the venue for the 3rd National Track and Field competition. Uganda Christian University has finally salvaged the national competition offering free access to its murram running track on March 13, 2021. Athletes will however have to brace with 16 events (8 events each) on the day’s competition programme that covers both men and women categories. The events are: 100m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m, 5000m, javelin, shot put and long jump. Over 150 athletes have so far registered online to compete in the one-day competition that is scheduled to start at 11.00am and concludes by 2.00pm. All athletes and technical officials will have to strictly observe the Covid-19 SOPs to access the competition venue. The delay to kick start track and field competitions (specifically absence of standard tartan Namboole Stadium) however casts doubt in many athletics pundits on the country’s chances of producing more qualifiers (time barred) for 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Africa Senior Championships, U-20 World Championships etc This marks in earnest the first track and field competition this season (2021) after the abortion of two initial events – 1st and 2nd National competitions due to closure of Mandela National Stadium (with tartan track) turned into Ministry of Health Covid-19 medical facility. The alternative grassed Kyambogo University Sports Ground was equally inaccessible taken over by National Electoral Commission as national polling centre while Makerere University ground was unsuitable for the competitions.
