41st Edition of the Cross Internazionale della Vallagarine, Italy
18 year old Albert Chemutai, Uganda’s finalist at the IAAF World Championships in London, UK finished 2nd behind Ethiopia’s Telahun Bekele at this year’s Cross Internazionale della Vallagarina held at Villa Lagarina, Trento, Italy.
Ethiopia’s Bekele outclassed Albert who came five seconds later at the final incline with a pros final touch to compete the race as winner. Yashin Haji, Ethiopia’s 2015 IAAF World U20 Cross Country Championships finished 3rd in 27:22.
With that win, Ethiopia’s Bekele become the 1st Ethiopian to win the men’s title since 5000m Champion Muktar Edris back in 2013.
The event in Trento is an annual cross country competition held in mid January in Rovereto, Italy and derives its name from the Vallagarina Valley in which the city is located. The event was established in 1978 following the successful hosting of the local runner Christina Tomasini at the Rovereto, Italy at the 1977 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and derived its name from the Vallagarine valley in which the city is located. The race was a women’s race only at its inception.
Christina Tomasini was the inaugural winner of the Cross Della Vallagarina. The men’s race was introduced in 1981.
